I posted a picture on Instagram the other day of my breakfast smoothie and it got a little attention as it was a little different than my usually green breakfast smoothie. Every so often, when I crave something chocolate, I replace my usual green breakfast smoothie with one made with raw cacao. It is chocolatey tasting, light and indulgent. The great thing is that it is also full of healthy things - even some greens - and is super easy to make.
The chocolate taste comes from the addition of raw cacao. Raw cacao comes from cacao beans which are found on an evergreen tree called theobroma cacao. Raw cacao contains anti oxidants, minerals such as magnesium and iron, vitamins and healthy fats. We know anti oxidants are very important for a healthy diet and for fighting many common causes of ill health. They are also super for combating premature aging.
Store bought choclate as we know it has all kinds of sugars, additives and binding agents. When we hear that chocolate is good for us, it is the raw cacao that is good for us and not all the other ingredients added to the standard chocolate bar. So when we are craving chocolate, instead of grabbing a choclate bar that probably contains refined sugar, additives, condensed milk and binding agents, instead make yourself a fab, indulgent and healthy chocolate smoothie.
I add kale to mine as I am always trying to up my green leafy vegetable intake. But if you are craving something totally chocolately and just want a break from vegetables, leave the kale out and you practically think you are drinking a chocolate milkshake. This recipe serves two decent sized smoothies.
Ingredients:
1 Banana
2 Tablespoons of raw cacao
2 Cups of kale
4 Dates (pitted)
1 Cup of almonds
Cup of almond milk
Cup of filtered water
Method:
Blend all ingredients together in a blender and pour into two glasses to serve - could not be simpler.
